4th Generation iPOD (4G)

AppleInsider has posted a rumor that Apple is getting ready to unveil the next generation iPOD. The rumors put a 2" color screen, 50GB hard drive, and a TV out cable on the iPOD. Which would be very cool. I am also hoping this means there will be a better way to copy photos to it, the current accessory sucks.

I was planning on buying an iPOD this weekend for a couple trips I have coming up, but now I have to wait. I would hate to drop $500 and then have the new one come out in a couple months. Anyway, I have another MP3 player that can tide me over for now.

They neeed to improve the Battery Life on the iPod over everything else

#2 mark emac on 4.09.2004 at 4:32 PM

I just received a replacement 2nd generation iPod from Apple becuase of a screen problem. This machine has a color LCD!. The firmware does not support it but it is clearly color. In fact when the song title scrolls left to right it blue

Very odd

#3 g on 5.02.2004 at 11:38 PM

are you lying?

#4 Timmmaaay on 5.03.2004 at 2:39 AM

How many colours. One colue does not mean it is colour.

#5 zoonami on 5.04.2004 at 3:38 AM

its not color, the ipods screen has always had a blue colored tint due to its grayscale qualities

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

#7 Brendon Chrus on 5.14.2004 at 2:05 AM

Hey the i pod is suppose to have video out capabilites too. This doesnt meen on screen just with an attachment to a tv. I am in the same boat as James. I cant wait till it comes out i will be on the waiting list for sure. I hope that they offer ones with smaller hard drives aswell.

#8 nathan on 5.23.2004 at 12:04 AM

wow I've been fealing really left behind lately because all my friends have updated to the 3G. cant wait till this comes out and I can show them up. anyway the color screen and video out and stuff is gonna be great. For years ipod has been #1 now theres no possible way for the others to catch up. anyway i'm gunna have to go with "who cares" on this one. instead of haveing a huge HD they should invest more into makeing it a 12 hour battery life at least.

#9 J-Dawg on 5.23.2004 at 11:54 PM

Any word on when it is coming out? I hope its out soon. I've been waiting to get one for a while, and I would feel stupid getting one know and the next generation coming out a few months later.

#10 Epictetus on 5.27.2004 at 3:08 AM

I hve noticed that every time Apple comes out with a new edition, they sell off all thr old ones at about half price on their site. As I am a poor student without much of an income, I can't wait. Any guesses on the date?

#11 wigtore on 6.05.2004 at 12:22 AM

Apple is not expected to release its rumored 4th generation iPod until September,

#12 slobby on 6.27.2004 at 9:22 PM

i agree, changes ARE needed. the battery life from 2g to 3g was cut in half. also, the row of buttons SUX over the 2g version. you constantly have to "lock" the 3g because the slightest touch activates a button.

this was the WORST idea apple has done to date...

get back to the basics and stop trying to be so innovative you screw it up

also, you can bet that the next generation will use a different charger, remote, base, and probably earbuds so the pricks can continue to charge us for accessories that are obsolete with each generation

#13 Blue4u on 6.28.2004 at 9:13 PM

IM almost certain that the new 4th generation iPod is going to have bluetooth technology, that way they all can come with wireless headphones, and you can syncronize your iPod wirelesly. I just bought a 20GB iPod 3rd gen, and now im pissed after hearing about the 4th commin out soon. I dont think the 4th gen is going to be that great...it says it only displays pictures.....NO MOVIES.....even if it did display movies, no one is going to want to watch a 2 hour movie on a 2" screen...i mean come on!...and with the battery life the iPod has now without a color screen and all the new features....the battery will probably only last for about one and a half movies....srry apple, but this idea is really stupid..

#14 Derek Overlock on 7.01.2004 at 4:47 AM

I think this would be great I do have one question though. I have a warranty for it at Best Buy (Two-Years) I got my iPod Christmas 2003. If the Battery is dead or any thing happens to it. Would they give me the iPod Gen 4 because I dont think Apple would Still be selling the lower generations.. or do they?

#15 babythug on 7.02.2004 at 5:33 PM

I work at best buy and if there is a problem with the unit, they will give you what ever is closer to what you own but you can always upgrade and pay the difference.

#16 Joey M on 7.03.2004 at 11:56 AM

Hey, it would be so cool if it had a movie player...is it certain to come out this september and will it only be about $500?

#17 Derek Overlock on 7.03.2004 at 4:40 PM

Babythug,

Ok but what i mean is this: Does Apple Still sell iPods that arent the current generation, if they dont, how am I suppose to get the closest to it when if they might not sell any 3G's ne more

Thnks Ne ways

#18 Hugin on 7.05.2004 at 6:03 AM

There were rumors back in March this year about 4G iPods comming out somewhen soon. Since then, it seems that there are no more information. WWDC is gone by now and nothing was mentioned about new iPods. I am wondering when they will come out. I am also wondering why there are no new trustable rumors about that any more.

Is there any Apple event soon which would be good for Apple to wait for announcing 4G iPods, such as WWDC would have been? Maybe this would be a key date?

#19 MoonU on 7.05.2004 at 2:08 PM

whenever it does come out, i still plan to buy the 3rd generation model, as the price will HOPEFULLY be reduced by some large percentage.

#20 Kamil on 7.06.2004 at 11:16 AM

Battery life is the key issue.....why dont they focus more on THAT? I get less than an hour on my 3G. Its complete bullshit. Im hating it to the point where i wanna trash this peice of shit.

#21 On the fence on 7.07.2004 at 12:27 AM

I am on the fence now about whether to buy a current ipod or not...I wish I knew if the release date was right around the corner...color screen would be sooo cool and I'd hate to buy one only to miss out on it...

#22 Hugin on 7.07.2004 at 6:25 AM

I guess that Apple will announce 4G iPods on some event. They didn't do it on WWDC. So, what is left?

July, 12-15: Macworld in Boston. However, Apple does not support it. Therefore I don't think that there will be a new iPod announced.

July, 31-Aug, 4: Mac Expo in Paris. Maybe there.

Jan, 10-15 (2005): Macworld San Francisco. Well, this would be too long to wait for an iPod. :-)

In fact, <http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/> recommends: "Don't Buy - Updates soon".

Any opinion to that?

its not going to have a color screen, color backlight yes but color screen NO a Newsweek article confrimed this

#26 jo pappa on 7.18.2004 at 6:35 PM

does anyone know when the release date of it will be i heard Monday........July 17, 2004 - Apple will announce new models of its standard 'white' iPods on Monday, Think Secret has learned.

According to sources, the company plans to unveil thinner, sleeker white iPods with a major announcement on Monday, July 19. While the enclosure will be the same general size as that of current iPods, it will be thinner; it will also have a new scroll wheel of different style and look.

Apple will not announce the new models through a press event, though Think Secret has learned that the announcement will be delivered through an out-of-the-ordinary publicity medium.

While we are not able to confirm the prices of the new iPods, sources say that they will be lower than those of current models.

Sources are also clarifying an apparent discrepancy with previous reports of an August revision; those reports may pertain to a separate iPod mini announcement rather than a replacement to the standard iPod line. Further details will be published as they become available.

#27 jo sinista on 7.19.2004 at 4:07 AM

sell your free iPod 15gb or miniPod on ebay so you can buy the new 4th gens. going for ~$260 on ebay... http://home.earthlink.net/~superassassin/freeipod/

#28 john on 7.19.2004 at 4:43 AM

if yall are lookin for more battery life for your 3G now that the 4G is comin out, check

http://www.pdasmart.com/ipodpartscenter.htm

they claim their replacement battery will pull up to 35% more, or about 11 hours at maximum... and for only $55

i might do this considering i'd end up spending a ton more selling all my used stuff to buy a 4G.

#29 Ann lee on 7.19.2004 at 4:16 PM

is it true that the battery only has a life spend of 18 months?

#30 derek overlock on 7.20.2004 at 1:06 AM

apple released the new 4G iPods...no video ports or w/e. same as other but... click wheel.. 20GB= $299 40GB=399. Theres some new features like the Shuffle and you can create multiple On-The-Go playlists

#31 2nd/3rd Generation Ipod User on 7.20.2004 at 11:03 AM

when will apple come out with firmware upgrades that will allow older ipods to receive the new features in the newer ipods?

#32 Jas on 7.20.2004 at 5:44 PM

I'm disappointed with the new iPOD 4th generation. All the talk of potential features never materialized. It is just like the old one with the exception of longer batteries, newer click wheel, and some new software features. Is it worth the money to buy this if you have the 3rd gen. already? There is not much benefit for the buck. I'm now waiting for the 5th generation. Hope it is better than this one. By the way, what is up with the gray wheel? They should have kept it white.

#33 Ben Doget on 7.24.2004 at 4:25 AM

Is it better to get the 3rd generation or 4th. Whats the better deal? And when is the 5th generation coming out

#34 Ben on 7.24.2004 at 7:12 AM

The 4th generation iPod is cheaper then the 3rd generation ones are (or where). The battery life is 12 hours compared to 4, the interface has been improved, and extra features, such as multiple 'on-the-go' playlists, have been added. So the 4th generation is definately the better deal.

I, like many others, are somewhat dissapointed with this 4th generation of iPods. I was expecting a wide range of new features, such as a colour screen, video playback, and some form on connectivity, such as bluetooth or infared.

Is apple going to release new firmwear for the 3G iPods so they have multiple on-the-go playlists?

#35 ipod fan on 7.25.2004 at 12:42 AM

Yea I'm also disopointed with iPODs 4the generation,

I'm from australia and I was going to buy a 15GB ipod 3G lol they only just came out in stores and now there being Phased-Out just like apple said

anyway with the new 4G I can buy the 20GB model for the same price. so 5GBs for space for me even though I don't need it because all my music is about 13GBs full and 5000+ Songs

Lol I buy alot of albums and download singular songs off WINMX (Best MP3 downloading program ever!, no spyware like kazaa or napster)

Anyways I don't really care about the colour screen all that would do if take more batteries to run and would be harder to see trust me I've got a colour screen phone and you have to have the backlight on otherwise you can't see it.

not much change between 3rd Gen and 4th Gen oh well its giving me an extra 5GBs so I'm happy.

Ipod is a good Mp3 player but can't play WMAs so I convert them to MP3 using programs also I have the Windows Media Player Mp3 Ripper (ripps Full CDs to Mp3 format)

Cheers

Rock on ipod you rule dont give up your still the best!

#42 misticus on 8.07.2004 at 12:09 AM

one question to everyone: how exactly does hte click pad work?? i mean is it heat sensitive or do u have to punch it down?

#43 4th Generation 20GB ipod owner on 8.08.2004 at 12:40 PM

The click pad is touch sensitive and as soon as your fingers touch the pad it lights up, like most Mp3 players the ipod features a lock feature to stop buttons being pushed while in your pocket. The New Click wheel like on the apple ipod mini was made to save space and also add the feature of using the ipod with one hand because you see the buttons click in like GBA and GBA SP buttons execpt heaps lighters and much rounder and bigger

its pritty sensitive and without the lock thing you couldn't have the ipod in your pocket without changing tracks

#44 MiA on 8.10.2004 at 9:49 AM

My new 4th generation ipod is coming in 3 days and i cant wait! I ordered it of ebay and am really excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#45 your mother on 8.16.2004 at 3:59 AM

so. the 4th generation ipod is here. its what you've all been waiting for. just one question on my part. if someone has recently bought an ipod, 15 gb, 3rd generation...is there anyway they could take it to the apple store with and get an upgrade for free since the 20 gb is now the same price?

#46 petegoodman on 8.23.2004 at 11:44 AM

The ipod 4gen is a waste of money, the hard drive is more inferior, the idea of having more then one on-the-go playlist makes no difference because the 3rd gen firmware can be updated. The buttons on the new ipod make no sence, the whole point in having an ipod is using the touch sensitive buttons, but the new click wheel uses moving parts, you may as well have gone for the iriver ihp120, it has more features and looks just as good. In terms of the battery life, yes the new ipod lasts 12hours, however the 3rd generation, you can buy the balkin backup battery for long journeys and so you can listen to it for as long as you wish. All in all, I feel that apple have rushed the 4th gen ipod and have developed an inferior prpoduct.

#47 Carly on 8.23.2004 at 6:56 PM

Hi!! I just got my iPOD 4th gen yesterday and I was wondering if there are any cases that can be used with it yet.

Thanks,

Carly

#48 petegoodman on 8.24.2004 at 3:27 PM

The best case available is the matthias aluminium armour case, all 3rd generation cases fit the 4th gen ipod so there is a lot of flexibility.

#49 rooney on 10.25.2004 at 10:16 PM

does any1 know when the 5th gen ipod or 2nd gen mini is coming out, as i don't want to buy the current generation just to find apple bring a killer ipod out in feb-april to obiliterate competition from sony and friends.

thank you

#50 CLIDE on 11.21.2004 at 8:40 PM

Hmm, 4G is already out (Click wheel)

5G is the COLOR PHOTO IPOD.

Theres a big difference.

I prefer the touch pad (3rd gen) over the click wheel (4th gen +)... it's just easier to navigate with 3G.

#51 what on 11.28.2004 at 12:36 AM

whatis this generation stuff

#52 Jorgos on 11.30.2004 at 11:49 AM

Can anyone tell me what exactly is the difference between 4./5.G IPOD despite the obvious: color and more storage.

#53 no one on 12.12.2004 at 2:46 PM

4g 20gb is thinner than ipod photo, WAy thinner and they both have click wheel so i guess nothing apart from the accessories that come with it

#54 papito uxmal on 12.13.2004 at 3:10 AM

i have the new ipod and is very funny when everybody ask me about it on the subway but i have to say something to those guys waiting for the new ipod "GET A LIFE" IF YOU GUYS REALLY WANT TO AND IPOD JUST GO AND BUY IT and for those who have ipod enjoy it's just great.

#55 mangoman on 12.24.2004 at 6:35 PM

mmm, I like my fourth gen ipod. Mcuh better than the others!Suckers...

#56 j-man on 12.30.2004 at 10:15 PM

ipod photo has been out for ages it comes in 40gb and 60gb models they are very good can store over 25,ooo pics or 15,000 songs they are good in size considering the hardrive size

#57 j-man on 12.30.2004 at 10:19 PM

what is the point in waiting for the second generation mini ipod its a rectangle with click wheel and doesnt have as much storage yes it is smaller but wat is the point in getting it it costs loads n it is just a music player if you wanna know the 1 to get you best getting the 4th generation click wheel its cool the clkick wheel is easy to use and is so sensitive just get that best for price and best for music.

#58 louise on 1.01.2005 at 12:25 PM

hi, having a thick day today, whats the clickwheel feature? my mate has an ipod and his wheel is the one where you move your finger around in a circle, is this the thing your all talking about???

thnx

#65 Thomas O. on 1.27.2005 at 2:54 AM

Yeah I say just buy and ipod if you do the math the ipod mini is about $62 per GB the ipod is just around $15 per GB and there's a new ipod mini coming out anyway so you dont want to buy one and be stuck with an old piece of crap also 4gb is small and the new 5gb is still way too small just get the ipod its the best deal plus with an educational discount from apple's website you can get it for $269 the ipod mini is $229 by the way

#66 Renee on 1.30.2005 at 2:20 AM

Hey-

does anyone know what the difference is between ipod 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation?

I think the ipod mini is a rip off, because you don't get that many songs, and the only thing cool is the colors.

In the next 6 months I want to buy an ipod. I don't need more than 20 GB, but I want color. Does anyone have an opinion about color ware pc?

#67 Jon on 4.01.2005 at 9:18 PM

#69 okotoko nitti balouga on 4.13.2005 at 9:09 AM

first of all id like to say that the 4th generation ipod has nothin to do with what this site is all about. I want to talk about my life and how i messed up at school and stuff this is just ****** (fucked) up yesterday i did good at school my teacher was proud of me because i did good in english class so the m,oral lesson of our conversation today is not to get an ipod but to get a life.

The 4th Generaton colour ipod is a great product, and I am sure it would have made great bussiness sense for apple to tell their customers not to buy their 4th generation ipod, but to hold on as the 5th generation will be out soon!!!!! (Sarcasim) Stop talking stupid.
